Writing Wednesdays: Influential Reading

Here’s a question. Is it a good idea to read books of a similar genre of the one you are trying to write or it might ‘influence’ us too much?

Various authors that I’ve interviewed have spoken against reading books in their genre because they didn’t want to be influenced.

I find that it depends on the writer and how easily influenced s/he is.

In my honest opinion, I think everything influences us—whether we read the same genres, or not. Some aspect of a book we read, a movie we watch, or a show we enjoy will undoubtedly carry over, that’s why there is rarely a truly original idea (even with genuinely original ideas, there are still hints of themes popular in the genre.)

Read anything you’d like while you write, just keep in mind that your mind may subconsciously refer to past books for inspiration.

Happy writing!
